75. A child's dictionary of poetic terms

I read thin volumes,
published on thin grants,
thinner paychecks,
thinning sacred cows,
seeking out fat truths
about big things,
like what "poetry" means,
what life means,
why nobody understands,
why the feeling simultaneously
corrodes and liberates,
kills and does the phoenix.

In my children's dictionary,
"poem" would have no definition,
we'd focus instead on "duckling",
"dumpling" and "delight".
We'd tell kids not to talk about music--
we'd tell them to sing.
We'd hand them the paints,
clear off the walls, never try to define
"this is Art, this is Truth".
